Birth control is an important part of women’s health care. It allows a woman and her partner to plan the number of children to best suit their needs and lifestyle. Here at Madonna OBGYN and Medical Spa in Rochester and Geneseo, we are proud to offer birth control to our patients and encourage you to learn more about it.
Pregnancy and childbirth are physically exhausting, and the new mother needs time to recover from both. She also needs time to adjust to her new role and to bond with her baby. That means she needs to be able to space her pregnancies, and many experts recommend that a woman should wait at least 18 months before trying to get pregnant again. If she experienced complications during her pregnancy or delivery, she should wait even longer. Birth control can let her do that.
What is Essure?
Essure is a permanent method of birth control that can be used as an alternative to tubal ligation. It is a soft and flexible coil that the doctor will insert into a Fallopian tube. Over the next three months, tissue will grow around the coil and thus form a permanent blockage that will prevent any sperm from reaching the egg. The patient will have to use another form of birth control during those first three months. Essure does not produce hormones. The insertion process is a non-invasive procedure that takes around 10 or 15 minutes and does not require any anesthesia.
What are IUDs?
IUD stands for intrauterine device and it describes a type of birth control that the doctor inserts into the patient’s uterus.
Some IUDs work by secreting progesterone or other hormones. The hormones partially suppress ovulation and make the mucus in the cervix thicker, which prevents sperm from reaching the egg. Hormonal IUDs can also make the lining on the uterus thinner which makes it harder for a fertilized egg to successfully implant itself. Other IUDs don’t secrete hormones but prove toxic to both sperm and egg and thus prevents pregnancy.
The various IUDs can further help patients by reducing the pain and discomfort that often accompanies periods. In addition, IUDs are reversible. If and when the patient does decide she wants children, the doctor can remove the IUD. Inserting an IUD is a simple procedure that can be done in the doctor’s office. IUDs can be safely used by both teenagers and women who are breastfeeding.
