BOTOX® is one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments available today. Its popularity stems in part from its ease of application, safety, and natural results. It has been estimated that on an annual basis more than six million of these treatments have been administered. Many adults who have had this cosmetic treatment done swear by it. They set their calendar so they will be available to get their treatments touched up when the need arises. To better understand why this cosmetic treatment is so popular, we at Madonna OBGYN and Medical Spa are going to discuss what causes dynamic wrinkles and how this celebrated cosmetic treatment can make dynamic wrinkles all but disappear.
Improving Your Appearance with BOTOX®
The aging process is inevitable. Getting wrinkles is a sign of living a life full of emotion, including smiles, frowns, and laughter. As we get older, our facial muscle tone increases. This muscle tone increase when paired with a decrease in collagen production results in more wrinkles. There are other factors that may add to the formation of wrinkles, like being in the sun without sunscreen, smoking, over drinking, and using illicit drugs. These are primarily static wrinkles.
Neuromodulators such as BOTOX® are designed to treat dynamic wrinkles. These are the wrinkles that form from expressions. Examples of dynamic wrinkles could include:
- Glabellar Lines – These lines are the lines that are most commonly treated with a neuromodulators. These are the lines that sit right in between your eyes on your forehead. Because they stand next to each other vertically, some people will refer to these as 11’s. Because these lines sit right on your forehead, they are prominent. In addition to making you look older, these wrinkles can make you look perpetually serious.
- Crow’s Feet – These are sometimes referred to as laugh lines. These are the wrinkles that form on the sides of your eyes when you smile or when you laugh. The ironic thing about these lines is that when you are younger and laugh so hard that crow’s feet are visible, they serve as an indication to others that your laugh is genuine. When you are younger, crow’s feet are widely considered attractive. An interesting thing about crow’s feet is that they are both dynamic wrinkles and static wrinkles. So while neuromodulators may be able to prevent the formation of new wrinkles, those that already exist will need to be treated with a dermal filler.
- Forehead Wrinkles – Your frontalis muscle is a large muscle that sits atop your forehead. When you raise your eyebrows, this muscle contracts. This causes forehead lines to appear. Your forehead is one of the largest parts of your face. It plays a large role in showing emotion. So people are constantly looking at your forehead whether they want to or not. If it is full of wrinkles, it can make you look older, frustrated, worried, or sad.
- Bunny Lines – This is a cute name for wrinkles that form on the bridge of your nose.
There are other forms of dynamic wrinkles that BOTOX® can treat. These would include lipstick lines, marionette lines, and chin dimpling.
Neuromodulators work by interfering with the signals sent from nerves and facial muscles. In effect, they render the treated muscles partially paralyzed. So your nerves will not send the signals to your muscles telling them to contract when you make certain facial expressions.
This does not mean that you are going to have a frozen face. You will be able to smile and make other facial expressions. The only difference is that, similar to when you were younger, your muscles will not produce the dynamic wrinkles that make you look prematurely old.
Dispelling Myths About This Treatment
There are a lot of myths about BOTOX®. Some of these myths have led people to avoid getting a treatment that could very well improve their appearance and the quality of their life.
One myth is that if a person stops getting treatments, their wrinkles will get worse. You may hear people say that once you start, you can never stop. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The results from this treatment are temporary. After your injections, you should expect the results from treatment to last from between three and six months, depending on your metabolism, your muscle strength, and how frequently you have these treatments done.
Once you stop having treatments, your face will simply go back to its pre-treated appearance. Your wrinkles will not get worse. It is true that when people start using neuromodulators to control dynamic wrinkles, they don’t want to stop. It’s not because the wrinkles will get worse; it’s because people want to stay looking younger longer.
Another myth is that this treatment only works for improving dynamic wrinkles. The truth is that neuromodulators have been used for decades as a way of treating a wide range of medical conditions. One of its first uses was to help individuals who had a lazy eye. They have been used to help people with TMJ, hyperhidrosis, back pain, neck pain, and migraines. In fact, it was during the use of this product for migraines that its cosmetic benefits were first seen. People who were getting injections to treat migraine pain noticed that wrinkles around the area that was being treated started to disappear.
The Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of this treatment for more than 20 years to address a wide range of conditions. This treatment has an unquestionable safety record.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Prior to your first treatment, you are going to have a consultation with a medical professional. During that consultation, we will ask you questions about your current health, any medications that you are taking, and any conditions that you have that affect your muscles or your nerves. It is important that you are open and honest during this phase of the process. There may be certain medications or supplements that could have a negative interaction with the treatment.
Once we’ve discussed your health history, we will talk to you about your goals for the treatment. Individuals who have a realistic outlook on what the treatment is, what it does, and what it can do are the ones who are going to be the happiest with their results. If you get any type of cosmetic treatment because you want to please others or because you think it is going to change who you are or the way that other people treat you, you are going to be disappointed. However, if you want to have these treatments done because you want to improve the way you look and you want to improve the way that you feel about yourself, it is likely that you are going to be pleased with the results.
The entire treatment process takes no more than 30 minutes. Your face will be cleansed and the injections will be performed. After the treatment is complete, your doctor will give you some indications about what to do and what to avoid over the next 24 hours. You will be able to walk out of the clinic and go right back to your everyday activities. If you don’t tell anyone you have treatments done, no one is going to be the wiser.
