Intrauterine devices (IUD) are a long acting form of reversible contraception that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. IUD’s are among the most widely used form of contraception and are considered the most effective. Two types of IUD are available in the US – hormonal (Sklya and Mirena) and copper (ParaGard There are three types of IUD’s inserted in this office:

  • Skyla – progesterone secreting IUD inserted for three years (skyla-us.com)
  • Mirena – progesterone secreting IUD inserted for five years (mirena-us.com)
  • ParaGard – copper IUD effective for twelve years (paragard.com)

IUD’s are safe in premenopausal women who are breastfeeding as well as adolescents to prevent pregnancy and to control heavy bleeding.   An IUD also can improve pelvic pain caused by painful periods. They work by effectively by inhibiting the sperm from coming in contact with the egg, thus preventing pregnancy. IUD’s are immediately effective after insertion. An IUD does NOT protect against sexually transmitted infections.
